Documents required to apply for a PAN card application online (citizens of India)
The PAN card documents required list for citizens of India typically involves three types of documents. These are proof of identity, proof of birth, and proof of address. Therefore, if a citizen of India wishes to apply for a PAN card online, he/she must keep the documents mentioned below handy.
Documents related to proof of identity
Individuals have to submit the following documents to apply for a PAN card
- Voter ID card
- Passport
- Ration card with the applicant’s photo
- Driving license
- Aadhaar card
- Photo ID card (issued by the Central Government/State Government/underrating public sector).
Documents related to the proof of birth
Individuals need to submit a copy of the following documents as proof of address.
- Electricity bills
- Broadband connection bills

Note: -
- The documents required for minor applicants involve the parent’s/guardian’s identity proof that would serve as both the identity and address proof of the minor applicant.
- The documents (as proof of identity) needed for Hindu Undivided Family or HUF(s) includes an affidavit of the Karta of the HUF declaring the name, father’s name, and address of all the coparceners on the application date.
Documents required for PAN application by NRIs
NRIs need to submit a copy of the following documents -
- Passport
- OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card allotted by the Government of India
- PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) card allotted by the Government of India
- Any of the following documents: citizenship ID number, taxpayer ID number, national ID number. The document must be attested either by the apostille* or by the High Commissioner/Indian Embassy/Consulate working in the applicant’s native country.
- Overseas bank statement
- Overseas address proof
- *Apostille- Apostille refers to the specialised certificate (international attestation) that is accepted by countries that participated in the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. The certificate is accepted in nearly 92 countries and works as a way of authentication to validate the documents.
Documents related to the proof of address
The documents required for the NRI PAN card is listed below
- Passport
- PIO card issued by the Central Government
- OCI card issued by the Central Government
- Registration Certificate that the Foreigner’s Registration Office issues, showing Indian address
- Non-resident foreign bank account statements in India
- Bank statements of the foreign country where the applicant resides
- Any of the documents of citizenship ID number, taxpayer ID number, national ID number. The document must be attested either by the apostille or by the Indian Embassy/the High Commissioner/Consulate working in the applicant’s native country.
- Visa (granted by the foreign country)
- An appointment letter copy given by the Indian company/employer-issued original Address Certificate in India.

- Company- Registration Certificate (issued by the Registrar of Companies) copy.
- Limited Liability Partnership- Registration Certificate (issued by LLPs) copy.
- Trust- Registration number certificate or trust deed certificate copy (issued by the Charity of Commissioner).
- Partnership firm- Registration Certificate (issued by the Registrar of Firms)/Partnership deed copy.
- Association of persons, local authority, body of individuals, artificial juridical person - Registration number certificate/agreement copy issued by Charity Commissioner or Registrar of cooperative society or equivalent document by the Central or State Government recognizing the identity and address of the concerned person.
Cost to apply for PAN card online
- For the Indian communication address, the charge for applying for a PAN is Rs.200 (excluding Goods and Services Tax).
- For the foreign communication address, charges for applying for a PAN are Rs.2100 excluding Goods and Services Tax).
- Payment can be made through credit/debit card, DD, or net banking.
